Works – instincts

The opening track to our debut-album “Instincts”, VICTIM kicks of the album with a bang.

The song can pretty much only be classified as pure thrash metal, and is heavily inspired by early 80’s thrash metal acts such as the big four: Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax.

The song is short, with a bit of a punk rock vibe, such as many early thrash songs. It is by all means our “simplest” song in terms of musicality, but it gets the job done. The lyrics are personal, and are about a broken childhood, manipulation, and guilt-tripping. Kind of a teenage-angst vibe in this one, eh?

In 2017, we advanced to the second round of the Norwegian youth culture contest: UKM, after judges loving our song “Instincts”. The problem was, that the song was over 8 minutes, and in the second round, we could only play a maximum of 5. We had only a couple of weeks to write a new song, as all the others we had were too long. Thus, the song was named RISK, even before it was born. RISK is more of NWOBHM song, with a catchy melody, lots of gallops, and a harmony-solo. We had to pack as much as we could into RISK, to impress the judges in the short time we had. This was also a brilliant exercise in growing as musicians, and we got to show our Iron Maiden influence.

We are really proud of what we accomplished, especially since the song won the second round for us, and got us a gig at the now legendary Norwegian festival “Tons Of Rock”. It was the first taste of making it big that we had, and has driven us ever since. Oh, and the lyrics don’t really mean all that much, think Nirvana on this one.

BUCKET LIST

One of our more successful songs, this is a personal one. Our drummer Amund’s father, and William’s uncle, sadly passed away way to early in the fall of 2013. Both the music and the lyrics here try to represent the experience you go through when you get an expiration date, specifically by terminal illness. The melody is a journey through denial, anger, frustration, sadness and in the end, relief. The song is definitely our most honest and raw song, and in many ways the greatest. Such is only appropriate, in regards of the great man it pays homage to.

The song is half instrumental, as music better describe the emotions in the latter part, than words can. The lyrics are written by Amund himself, in an extremely tough period of his life. To this day, they are definitely our most raw and powerful lyrics. All in all this song is a journey, that we are happy to share with you, especially you who have experienced similar things.

SURVIVAL

Pretty much the precursor to FREE, and also one of our more popular songs, this anti-war anthem is a Rock/Metal song that is made for festival-stages. Our first venture into more of a Rock sound, this iconic riff written by our lovely guitarist Edvik, is sure to please a broad audience. Kinda radio-friendly, but still sings about killing enemies to prevail in a war situation.

This song is epic, and made to be so, being one of only two songs with female harmony-vocals. Thrash fans fear not, the bridge in this song has you covered. Again, like RISK, writing this song was great for growing as musicians, and helped to polish and refine our sound a bit.

SHALLOW RIVER

Another personal song. Written by our vocalist and guitarist William, this is a song that dives deep into mental health issues, and suicidal thoughts. Melodically it is obviously inspired by 80’s thrash metal ballads such as “Fade To Black” by Metallica, and lyrically inspired by the honesty of such songs. Not only is this meant to be healing and to help the writer work through some personal stuff, but it is also meant to give back to the culture, and to give back to music. Music has helped so many, and is a powerful tool when it comes to overcoming devastating times of loneliness, depression and anxiety. Listening to this music can be a great way to realize that you are not alone, and you are not crazy for feeling or thinking what you do. William overcame this period of his life, a lot thanks to music, and our hope is that this song can help others.

If only one person finds this helpful, relatable or comforting, then we have done our job right.

INSTINCTS

Ah yes, the title track to our debut-album. INSTINCTS kind of sums up this period of time for us. We were quite young when these songs were written, still trying to figure things out. As with all teenagers, there was drama, pain, love, anger, frustration any everything in between. Growing up means seeing the world for what it really is; beautiful, but also horrible at times. The concept of INSTINCTS revolves around the connection between our primal instincts and our modern intelligence and knowledge. Our instincts often get the best of us, even today, but is that really an excuse when we know better? All of us experience this inner fight sometimes in our modern world. The event that inspired this concept stems from a horrible case of sexual assault. The anger and hate which such an experience rightfully fuels, led to this particular song, as a form of venting through music. The lyrics are representative of someone trying to make such a horrible thing make sense. Just as complex as the mental anguish that inspired these lyrics, is the music. This is our first prog-inspired song, and the one that changed the direction of the band into what we are today.

LOST is the first “proper” song written by us, and the earliest one to make our published works. This song was written back in 2016. This is a classic thrash metal song, and quite barebones in that regard. It is still a crowd-pleaser to this day, and is catchy, with a memorable chorus.

The lyrics are about losing someone close to you, to addiction. Inspired by real events, the song is sung angrily at the person struggling, representing someone frustrated by the fact that they aren’t able to help them. Many people have similar experiences to this, and knows what is like to feel useless in a situation like this. It is heavy and hurtful, and a perfect taboo topic for a metal song. Everything isn’t all black and white, and we support freedom of speech, and the ability to openly and honestly share feelings and thoughts.

That’s what our music is all about, and in many ways this is the quintessential Chain Home song.

BLOODSHED

Album cover for "Instincts". Dark water in a cave.

Purely meant as an aggressive and heavy thrash metal song, BLOODSHED is the only one of our songs that almost boarders to death metal. Favored by fans of us that prefer heavier and darker shades of metal, this song still makes our setlist from time to time, as it is just really fun to play, and kind of badass.

Don’t read too much into the lyrics here, they’re simply there for artistic purposes, and do not in any way represent the thoughts or meanings of the members of this band. This accompanies VICTIM and LOST as the third and final thrash song from our debut-album, and is a fitting end to the record.
